He has beautiful, fine, bright, soft, crimpy, consistent fleece. Solid bone, a pleasing head, and all-around excellent conformation complete the picture of a top herdsire.

Leonardo is one of very few full Accoyo sons of 4P Legacy, a herdsire who is legendary for his fiber remaining very fine past ten years of age and for producing highly prized offspring. Crescent Moon Alpacas sold a half interest in Legacy for $750,000. AML Accoyo Stefani, a sister of Leonardo's through his dam, sold at auction for $70,000.

Leonardo has had a run of wins in the show ring, including Light RESERVE COLOR CHAMPION at the 2005 North American Alpaca Show (Level V), right behind his brother Salud, another Legacy son. Leonardo's first two crias arrived this fall--both females--one beige or light fawn out of a fawn dam, and the other brown out of a grey dam. Both look exceptional. Cangalli Gold's Quentin
Cangalli Gold delivers! Quentin represents all that we admired in Cangalli Gold and, out of Kassandra, he retains her beige coloring with great coverage. Quentin placed third in a very large halter class at the 2005 NECC and his fiber took 4th behind Riana, his half sister's by .75 points. He placed sixth at the Empire Extravaganza in an even larger, tougher class and his fiber took 3rd, again behind his half sister's, at the 2006 Empire Symposium. His fiber quality is reflected in the 20 out of 20 score in fineness and handle. His fleece analysis shows the consistency of his fleece with a 19.5 micron but also a SD of 3.3, a CV of 17 and a CF of 99.4%. We are pleased to see how well he is holding his fineness.

At the 2006 North American Alpaca Show, Quentin placed third behind the Color Champion and Reserve Champion. Judged by Jude Anderson, she commented about his extremely fine fleece, coverage and his great confirmation. Comments on his fiber from the 2006 MAPACA Jubilee also noted his fineness and great staple length, awarding him 19 out of 20 on fineness/handle and 7 out of 7 on length. Most recently he placed second behind the Color Champion again. Kristin Buhrmann's comments were great conformation, great fleece! She noted his crimp from shoulder to rump, excellent bone, broad chest and coverage.

Quentin is available for breeding at your farm (mobile) or at ours (drive-by). Contact us for more details.

Handsome Devil
Handsome Devil (1/2 Accoyo) has a well-locked, lustrous dense fleece on a perfectly conformed and balanced frame. His dam, Sal, is one of Tillman's best producing Bolivians. Handsome Devil's maternal line is impressive as Sal has been amazing no matter who she is bred to and a couple of her outstanding get include Tillman's The Big Kahuna and Luster Supreme. His sire, Pperuvian Miguel, is an outstanding herdsire who has built the foundation of Super Suris award winning herd. He has sired all suri offspring and many are show winners. He has excellent luster and he still locks to the skin. Miguel was 1st Place Get of Sire at the '01 AOBA National Show.

Handsome Devil is 23.6 micron with a Mean Scale Frequency of 5.8 scales/100 microns on his virgin fleece and 4.9 scales/100 microns on his second fleece, one of the best of the Tillman's Electron Microscopy study! This is an amazingly bright fleece. Peruvian whites average 7.5 scales/100 microns. The lower the number the brighter the fleece.

Handsome Devil is a highly evolved white suri and offers luster, density, locks and conformation. He produced 4.5 lb skirted blankets on his 2nd and 3rd fleeces and in 06 3.5 lbs of leg wool. Now that is pretty extreme!

Hunter Hill Dimaggio
Dimaggio has an extremely bright, fine fleece. He's Accoyo on his sire's side (The Last Don), and Hemingway/Bueno on his dam's side. His dam has 20 AFD / 21 CV fleece at 4 years old, 10 crimps per inch and has one of the densest fleeces we've ever seen. Dimaggio's confirmation is perfect, and he is the friendliest cria we've had on our farm. He has ultra-fine fleece, crimp (AT LEAST 10 per inch) from the skin to the tips and....as if that's not enough...just look at the head on this boy! In his first show he placed 4th in one of the most competitive white juvenile classes ever! The 2007 NAAS had 5 juvenile classes of 14-15 animals in each class. The class Dimaggio was in included most of the top farms in the country! Judge Amanda VandenBosch described him as having "very fine fleece" with "very organized fleece character and long staple length". At MAPACA, the judge said that Dimaggio was "definitely the finest fleece in the class". This junior stud is only going to get BETTER and BETTER as he ages.

IF Santiago
We were pretty sure that this guy was something special on the day he was born with such curly wet fleece. He's a yearling, but to look at him you would think he's ready to start his breeding career, due to his well developed frame. When you see him, the first thing most notice is his beautiful head with short muzzle, correct ear set and shape. The eye is then drawn to his balanced frame supported by a set of legs even a runway model would appreciate. His motion and gate is fluid(in fact, we imagine him carrying a container of water on his head and not spilling a drop as moves about).

And, as to his fleece...

Glowing brightness (like his dad's)

Super soft handle

Superb coverage with a dense top knot and heavy fleece to the ground

Remarkable consistency in terms of fineness, crimp frequency and amplitude, staple organization, and (perhaps most important for a black) color.

Besides A.L. Paca's Revolution, his pedigree includes the genetic powerhouses: Peruvian Bueno (Alianza) and Accoyo's King, Royal Fawn and Caligula.

In Feb. 2011, Santiago won his third Color Championship!!!

Santiago is co-owned with Doug & Denise Caldwell of A.L.Paca's Farms and should be ready to start breeding in the spring of 2011.

Shadow is a true non-fading black suri with coverage dripping to the toes. His independence of lock remained such that he parted like a curtain to the skin until we sheared him at nearly four years of age! And talk about luster...!

SIR PETREE

Sixth Day's Stellar Prospect
Breeding for Elite Fleece we all know is a great challenge, breeding an animal already displaying Elite qualification is just that much more difficult. Enter Stellar Prospect. Blending two of the most influential Alpaca Sires ever, Bueno & Hemingway has produced undeniable lasting finess in their progeny and we believe this characteristic must be indelibly stamped on this young male. Given the high quality females in his storied pedigree, NWA, LTD Marcie, PPPeruvian Dorsett, PPPeruvian Salutation, and PPeruvian Macarena; Prospect has enormous potential to become a prepotent sire in his own right.

Rarely do you see a pedigree of this quality with each animal contributing to the goal for which that animal was bred. Prospect shows every promise of being what he was bred to be; a prepotent sire of long lasting fineness, the future of our industry.

Proudly Co-owned with Sixth Day's Farm, Stellar Prospect is currently residing at StoneGate and we will begin using him to breed into our program this spring & summer of 2011.

Note: Stellar Prospect suffered injury before StoneGate acquired him and ended a potential show career. While disheartning to not be able to display this extraordinary young male we were so impressed by him and the potential of his progeny that we couldn't wait to partner with Sixth Day Farm and get him on the ground in Vermont and working. At StoneGate we are convinced the wait will be more than worth it.

SLEEPING MONK FARM ARISTOTLE
An Accoyo Royal Avenger son, SMKF Aristotle, has ribboned in all the shows he has been entered in - his latest award being 2nd Place at the National AOBA Show 2007. Aristotle has excellent bone, very correct conformation, a fine, yet very dense fleece, exhibiting very nice crimp and a very long staple length. Aristotle pulls his Accoyo heritage from both sides of his pedigree and Alianza from his dam's side. He has great presence and is very easy to work with.

SLEEPING MONK FARM ARLO
SMKF ARLO, a Polaris son, became a Color Champion at his first show, the NAAS 2006, a Reserve Color Champion at both the NAAS 2007 and the AOBA National Show 2007. ARLO is also a Multi-Time Blue Ribbon Winner. Breed ARLO to your colored females and expect exceptional cria.

Virgil is just starting his breeding career. His sire: NA Lord Forester eared himself Championship, Reserve Championship and numerous 1st. Virgil has also earned himself a blue. His paternal great grandsire is none other than PPeruvian Royal Fawn. His dam has always produced show winning offspring. Whispering Winds Eye of the Storm

Whispering Winds Panama Jack
Right from the start, this young male has wowed us! He has a lovely uniform fleece, with very soft handle and healthy sheen, excellent density, and long staple length that is crimpy from end to end. This beautiful fleece comes on a solid, correct frame, which is further complimented by a pedigree that offers a wide diversity of genetics and color, as well as a pleasant temperament. Jack was only 2yrs old this past spring when he settled his first four females, each with a single breeding! He clearly knows his job, but is easy to handle and is always the gentleman.

July'08 ~ Jack's first four cria have arrived! Every one of them is stong, healthy and good looking and it looks like Jack has had a wonderful influence on their fleeces. Very exciting, Jack! (first two cria pictured below)

We are privileged to co-own Panama Jack with Ibiwisi Alpacas.

The Alpaca Fiber Market By of Ann Arbor Alpacas
GLAA member Kara Heinric
The U.S. alpaca fiber market is still being developed. Currently, it's a combination of some cottage industry and some commercial processing. Even just 5 years ago, most alpaca fiber was processed or sold directly by the breeder themselves. While this can be a lucrative way to handle each year's clip, it's time consuming and ultimately the market is limited by the number of handspinners or craftspeople in an area. As the alpaca industry grew in the United States it became clear that supply would outstrip demand...

Alpaca Supply and Demand

The summer is winding down and our thoughts are turning toward the cool days of autumn. After this season of extreme humidity, the alpacas will be thrilled with the brisk weather, as will I. I've heard quite a bit of buzz in the last few months about cases of odd skin conditions in alpacas, and often these conditions have turned out to be chorioptic mange. Whether the number of cases have increased or there is just more talk about it is unclear, but it seems to be here to stay...

Alpaca Fiber from the Textile Point of View By Mike Safley

April 2009 Meeting Minutes By Pattey Bleecker

Blue Eyed Whites By D. Andrew Merriwether, Ph.D., and Ann M. Merriweth
Much controversy and secrecy revolves around discussion and use of blue-eyedwhite alpacas (BEWs) in breeding programs. Blue-eyed white alpacas are all-white alpacas, with blue eyes, which are often (but not always) deaf. Recently some alpaca farmers have suggested that the BEWs should not be used for breeding so this gene can be eliminated from the American alpaca gene pool. This suggestion reflects some of the misinformation that surrounds the issue of BEWs...

Breeding and Birthing By GLAA members Lorrie and Randy Krause of Alpaca Acr
The foretelling signs of imminent birth vary from dam to dam, but can include frequent cushing then standing, hanging around the dung pile, dilated vulva or any change in behavior.
